Think of a time when you went to a temple or synagogue (or any other house of worship) for the very first time, and you did not know any of the congregants. How were you welcomed? Did you feel out of place? Did anyone let you know what to expect? Did anyone come up to you at the reception, say hello and make you feel at home?
When I arrived here more than three years ago, a number of people, both from temple and the greater Jewish community, let me know about Temple B’nai Israel’s reputation. I was told we can be a cliquish, cold congregation; we do not warmly welcome fresh faces, and we make it difficult for new congregants to feel as if they are a part of our temple.
